Public AI use case inventory

Posted January 28, 2026. Four use cases. Every row is marked not high-impact. The CSV is the machine-readable copy. This table is the copy a person can read.

ID System What it does Stage Date High-impact
NRC-0001 SimplifAI (TekSynap) Text retrieval for staff Deployed August 1, 2025 Not high-impact
NRC-0002 Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Chat Commercial assistant for staff. Uses personal data. Deployed June 1, 2025 Not high-impact
NRC-0003 GSA USAi Shared federal tool Pre-deployment January 1, 2026 Not high-impact
NRC-0004 ChatGPT Enterprise and Gemini for Government Two commercial assistants, listed together Pre-deployment December 1, 2025 Not high-impact

The FY26 plan also describes licensing reviews, power uprates, advanced-reactor reviews, and inspection preparation. Those activities are not rows in this inventory.

Files

  • Individual AI use case inventory (CSV) Machine-readable. Posted January 28, 2026. Four rows.
  • Consolidated commercial AI file Not posted as of October 6, 2026. Copilot, USAi, ChatGPT Enterprise, and Gemini for Government are already named in the individual inventory. The separate commercial file other agencies post beside that inventory is still absent.
  • Waiver summary Not posted as of October 6, 2026. If the count is zero, the sentence to publish is: “The NRC has issued no waivers under OMB Memorandum M-25-21.” Confirm the count before those words go on the live site.

What the NRC regulates

The NRC does not regulate artificial intelligence as a technology. It evaluates AI-enabled tools inside activities it already licenses and inspects. In October 2024 the staff reviewed the regulations and more than 500 regulatory guides and found the framework generally sufficient, with specific places that need clarification.

The longer explanation is on the FAQ. Applicants should start on Preparing to review AI in regulated activities.

Two plans, and an earlier one

When the FY26 plan says “high-impact” about licensing, power uprates, advanced reactors, and inspection preparation, that is ordinary language. In the public inventory, the OMB category “high-impact” applies to none of the four tools.

Governance and contact

Scott Flanders is Chief AI Officer. Questions go to CAIO@nrc.gov or the contact form.

The AI Governance Board oversees the agency’s own use of AI. The AI Steering Committee coordinates preparation for AI in activities the NRC regulates. Membership and meeting cadence are not on the public page.
