Artificial Intelligence

The NRC does not regulate artificial intelligence as a technology. It evaluates AI-enabled tools inside activities it already licenses and inspects. In October 2024 the staff reviewed the regulations and more than 500 regulatory guides and found the framework generally sufficient, with specific places that need clarification.

  • NUREG-2261 (fiscal years 2023–2027) May 2023. Earlier readiness plan for reviewing industry AI. Kept here so it is not mistaken for the FY26 plan.

Read this with the strategy

The FY26 plan uses “high-impact” for licensing, uprates, advanced reactors, and inspection preparation. The inventory uses “high-impact” as an OMB category. None of the four public use cases is in that category.
